Why are my messages delayed for a long period?

You may notice a significant delay in your Messages using SmarterMail.  The reason is that we have a anti-spam utility called "Greylisting" enable.  Greylisting is a new tool in the fight against spam.  What it does is temporarily block incoming mail from a sender.  It returns the mail to the sender's mail server with a message saying try again later.  The sending server must then retry sending the mail after the Block Period but before the Pass Period (approx. between 15 and 365 minutes).  Greylisting is effective because spammers will not usually bother to attempt a second delivery, but legitimate e-mail servers will.

The biggest disadvantage of greylisting is the delay of legitimate e-mail from servers not yet verified.  This is especially apparent when a server attempts verify a new user's identity by sending them a confirmation e-mail.  Some e-mail servers will not attempt to re-deliver e-mail or the re-delivery window is too short.  Setting up domains in the "Trusted Senders" list will help resolve this with known or valid senders.

If you wish to disable this on your email accounts, please login to your webmail account, and go to [Settings] > [My Settings] > [Mailbox].  On this tab, you will see a check box that says "Bypass Greylisting".  Please check this if you do not wish to take part in "greylisting".  However, you may notice more spam by disabling it.
